Tim Burton's Art World Apotheosis

I'd be remiss not to mention the upcoming Tim Burton Exhibition at MoMA beginning November 22nd, which is to include never-before-seen artifacts and elements of his classic works as well. The shrieks of glee have indeed been deafening amongst my circle of fiends ;)

True Blood Salvation

My favorite place to dance to dark rock both classic and current has been flaunted by the Daily News as the place to be for True Blood fans. The vampire association makes me wince a bit, as there are plenty of better reasons to check out Salvation -- such as hearing DJ Patrick (NYC's longest running goth DJ), spin the latest hits from Blacklist and other local New York success stories. Nonetheless, if you're into that skinny, pale, and sanguineous thing, you'll find plenty of aesthetically pleasing creatures every two weeks at Don Hills.

The Warlocks - The Mirror Explodes

The Mirror Explodes is swirling neo-psych-gaze with all the turbid intensity of My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3. It's music made for downers. What The Velvets started, The Warlocks continue, pushing off into infinite sonic space. At times roiling and fierce in "Standing Between The Lovers Of Hell" or daze-inducing and romantic melancholic on "There Is A Formula To Your Despair," this album is easily enjoyed from start to finish, in bed and on your back. Ever since my introduction to this murky collective in Vegas opening for The Sisters of Mercy, I have been entranced by their sensual drone, reverb OD, and fog machine excess (and that's saying a lot given Eldritch's voluminous smokey shrouds). With The Warlocks it's not always the most original sound, but it always drags you down for one hell of a ride...

Animal Instincts

Four Ukrainian artists make up Bob Basset, the virtual Live Journal user who brings us these lovely leather accoutrements.

(Many thanks to Stephen Musgrave for the tip!)

Cruel Black Dove @ Bowery Ballroom // Religious to Damn + Tamaryn @ The Annex

The cruelest black I am (x)
the one sung whilst glowing
red beacon saturated the stage.

Speared on the tip of the spire -
pointed sonic beams
that brought her to her knees,
cord wrapped 'round her wrist,
and eyes toward the sky in a paean
to gimme danger, fringe
on the ladies, the men sturdy behind,
they began...

Before another foursome hailing
from a different time, cinging sighs
and silken shrieks, serious
about salvation/damnation
and a vocal duo making waves
of silver and cold sparks ignited
by her smoldering aloof steps onstage.

And where there's smoke
machines there's fire in the form
of serpentine sounds voiced
by a gilded figure, coins
also clinking, entreating
and entrancing all hips
and hair and lean linear limbs
riding another side of the same wave
as her shimmering sister.

She returned,
and we surrendered.

Yeah, that's right. I wrote the review in blank verse, bitches!
