The Warlocks - The Mirror Explodes

The Mirror Explodes is swirling neo-psych-gaze with all the turbid intensity of My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3. It's music made for downers. What The Velvets started, The Warlocks continue, pushing off into infinite sonic space. At times roiling and fierce in "Standing Between The Lovers Of Hell" or daze-inducing and romantic melancholic on "There Is A Formula To Your Despair," this album is easily enjoyed from start to finish, in bed and on your back. Ever since my introduction to this murky collective in Vegas opening for The Sisters of Mercy, I have been entranced by their sensual drone, reverb OD, and fog machine excess (and that's saying a lot given Eldritch's voluminous smokey shrouds). With The Warlocks it's not always the most original sound, but it always drags you down for one hell of a ride...
